Why blue LED won 2014 Physics Nobel Prize?

2017 Nobel prize come out, but do you know that blue led also won 2014 Physics Nobel prize?

As we all know, tricolor are red, blue, green. White light can be made by tricolor. Red and green LED light had been successfully made during middle of the last century, but blue led light failed to launch for a long time, lead to led can’t be widely used for lighting.

Why blue led technology is so difficult?

Until late 1970s, red, green, yellow, orange and other color led had been made, they are used as display light of machine.

But blue led still not work out even though there are many companies, universities and scientists try to solve it, most of them had to give up since the limited of materials and processes. Make blue led was considered as impossible at that time.

In 1973, Isamu Akasaki who worked for Matsushita Electric Corporation of Tokyo Institute began his study of the blue LED, his research direction is GaN crystal, one of the most difficult of blue led technology (GaN、ZnSe、SiC are three main materials, use GaN to get blue light is the most difficult solution).

In 1989, Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano successfully got GaN crystal, and first time got blue led light in the world.

In 1993, Shuji Nakamura who worked as a technicians at Nichia Chemical Industries (Nichia), successfully made the high luminance blue LED.

 Once they did get blue led, however, the results were remarkable, white led light was obtained at the basics of blue led and yellow phosphor, and this technology can produce any color of led light, broaden the application of led. Blue led dramatically changed people’s lives, it is widely used in big LED screen, in your camera, computers, mobile phones, televisions etc.

 As Nobel Committee wrote:

Their inventions were revolutionary. Incandescent light bulbs lit the 20th century; the 21st century will be lit by LED lamps.
